Hell in the North
Our worst nightmare has come true. Not for us, but for our northern neighbors Canada. Next month Canada will see some of the first implemented Usage-Based Billing for their Internet. The cap went from 250 GB down to 25 GB with each additional gigabyte costing CAN $1.90. Considering that I have used well over 300 GB as a regular internet streaming and gaming user with Comcast here state-side I can only imagine what type of bills Canadian users will be seeing. This new rule has been implemented by the Canadian Radio-Telecommunications Commissions aims to just conserve bandwidth. By pushing this issue Canada will be the test ground for metered internet usage and will lay the groundwork for other countries to follow suit. It is a scary proposition that is to be sure, especially for us high end users. What do you think about what is happening in Canada? Comments welcome.

Well, first I want to say that Canada has now become the next U.S. The government is now trying to control every aspect in our lives, but I think it is highly unlikely that this would make it through U.S. court. The worst thing that could come out of this is that we will all be forced into a Half-Life City 17 atmosphere where we will all be pushed around by “Civil Protection” cops with guns. Back to the point, 25 GB is basically nothing to anybody that plays games on the computer and just using your computer the bills will eventually catch up to the cost of the games you bought or even possibly your computer.
They can take my bandwidth when they pry it from my cold lifeless hands.
I would like to hear the reaction from companies such as Steam and Netflix that are based on digital distribution. Bandwidth cap or increase usage costs is going to result in less people using those services. Netflix just recently said that soon it would like to become a purely streaming service.
STOP GIVING ME ANIMALS I CAN’T SPELL DAMNIT
Heh… I’ll look into another captcha. It has actually cut down on the spam comments.
Actually, I prefer it to most other ones. Plus I learned how to spell Koala. I’ve been putting that off for years.
The 111th Congress, the one that was just voted out, basically gave the internet service providers in America Carte Blanche to do the exact same thing. The companies wont be so bold to move like Canada just did but we will see something similar start gradually being implemented in the next few years. Not until consumers stop being so watchful of course.
